TRURO'S PROMOTION HOPES STILL ALIVE AFTER DOUR WIN

Truro 13, Wellington 5

Truro kept alive their promotion hopes with a victory which was much more comfortable than the final scoreline might suggest. The visitors came determined to keep the score down and were helped by a rather indulgent referee who failed to take the appropriate action to stop the Somerset side from spoiling the game as a spectacle. Truro vice-chairman Nigel Whitford said: "They were over the moon to lose by just eight points, but our dressing room after the game was like a morgue.

"But then skipper Marco Danieli reminded them that they had actually won the game.

"Last season this was the sort of match we would have lost, but the players were disappointed they couldn't carry on playing the sort of rugby they produced the previous week at Crediton."

The only points in a dour first 40 minutes came from the boot of full-back Scott Martin who landed two penalty goals in the 10th and 22nd minutes respectively.

The second half was little better and the only real highlight was Truro's only try of the game after 55 minutes.

A fine move saw fly-half Joe Williamson send centre Owen Hambly in under the posts with Martin adding the simple conversion points.

Both sides then had a player sin-binned after a fracas with Truro second row Sam Parker joining his Wellington opposite number Dan Masters on the sidelines for 10 minutes.

Wellington did manage to get on the scoreboard taking advantage of a Truro error with centre John Evans crossing for a try wide out.

However, they never threatened to make any further inroads as the city side held on for their 11th win in 17 league outings this season.
