Falmouth immediately had to defend very deeply and it wasn't long before the home supporters cheered as Truro went over for a try, or so it seemed. But the referee had spotted a forward pass.

Cries of "You're as bad as you were last week, ref" from the home supporters were met with applause from Falmouth's travelling fans - by this time nervously laughing off the decision.

Banter off the pitch couldn't stop Truro attacking though and inevitably they took the lead. A bullet of a drop goal from Ross Martin made it 3-0. The restart gave Falmouth the chance to regroup and player-coach Tim Gay, who put in a great performance throughout the match, battled hard as the Truro attack gathered momentum once more. It wasn't until 22 minutes that Falmouth found an attacking gear of their own and entered the Truro half. James Greville-Smith broke through for the first of many charging runs that caused Truro problems. The resulting passage of play led to a neatly taken try by Richard Hambly and Falmouth found themselves in the lead 5-3.

It was back to business after that for Truro who kept on the pressure and a Scott Martin penalty from in front of the posts edged them 6-5 up after Falmouth were penalised for coming in from the side of a ruck.

The second half started with Falmouth 6-5 down but with some promising passing by new scrum half Bundi Aki, who should be pleased with his performance. This alone can't win a rugby match though and soon enough Truro's Richard Tucker charged over the line to score a try. After the conversion, the scoreboard should have said 13-5, but if the people in charge of updating the board then proceed to sit in front of it, it's best to keep score yourself.

Tim Gay gallantly put in big tackles as he desperately tried to rally his men into some kind of form, but this was turning out to be Truro's day. They continued to look sharper and more threatening.

When Ross Martin broke free for Truro and dived over for a try, which went on to be converted, there was no way back for Falmouth.

A last minute try by Falmouth's Kyle Armstrong brought the score to 20-12, where it stayed until the final whistle. When it came to the crunch, Falmouth were outplayed by a Truro team focused on winning right from the start. Falmouth will be hoping for better luck when they entertain Wessex in the league on Saturday, while Truro are at Penryn in the Cornwall Cup on Sunday.

LAST-GASP LISTER COMES TO TRURO'S RESCUE AGAINST LEADERS

Newquay Hornets 5, Truro 5A LAST-gasp try by flanker Lister Metcalfe gave Truro a deserved share of the spoils in this fiercely contested Tribute Cornwall and Devon League derby against the league leaders at the Sports Centre on Saturday.

There is little between the two teams in the table and it was the same on the pitch in a game which produced little in the way of entertaining rugby.

Truro were given a pre-game boost by the return of centre Owen Hambly after the Cornish All Blacks terminated his contract and he should prove a major asset for the remainder of the season.

With the wind in their favour Newquay started the game strongly and took only six minutes to edge ahead.

Home scrum half Ryan Johns spotted space and kicked over the top of the Truro defence for wing Rob Macintyre to win the race to the touchdown for his 13th try in 14 league matches.

The home side enjoyed territorial advantage for the remainder of the first half but there was no more scoring.

For Truro No 8 James Allen kept the home back row going with some strong drives from the base but Truro gained little from their possession as both sides' defences ruled the day.

After the interval, it was the visitors who edged the territorial contest with fly half Ross Martin kicking well from hand.

However, serious threats to cross the line were rare, though Truro winger Justin Irons had a "try" ruled out for a forward pass.

Just when it looked as though the Hornets might cling on to their narrow lead, Truro's reward eventually came after 77 minutes when they kicked to touch from a penalty close in. Very little or nothing, that is, between the two sides on the day as there is between at least the top five clubs in the league, if not more.

Unfortunately, there was also very little in the way of flowing, entertaining rugby in this dour struggle of the defences as the neighbouring Cornish clubs conspired to give local rivals Falmouth and, more importantly, Devon contenders Cullompton and Tavistock, who both enjoyed narrow wins on Saturday, cause for encouragement.

The margins at the top of the league are now further reduced to negligible proportions. Cullompton's game in hand is looking significant and Hornets' visit to Tavistock next weekend now becomes a match of massive importance for both sides.

However, it is a sign of the progress Newquay has made in recent months that its fans go away from this match disappointed that they did not take all four league points from their league encounters with the city side.

To misquote Meatloaf: "three out of four ain't bad" against a side that the Hornets would, until recent times, have only dreamt of beating.

This wind-affected match was never likely to be high-scoring but Hornets started the stronger and set up camp in the Truro half. After six minutes scrum half Ryan Johns spotted space and kicked over the top of the Truro defence for wing Rob Macintyre to win the race to the touchdown for his 13th try in 14 league matches.

The home side enjoyed territorial advantage for the remainder of the first half, but their kicking game was having an off-day and they consistently failed to get the ball to their strike runners with their passing game. Truro gained little from their possession as both sides' defences ruled the day, maintaining a 5-0 score at half-time.

After the interval, it was Truro who edged the territorial contest, with fly-half Ross Martin kicking well from hand. However, serious threats to cross the line were rare from either side as the crowd were presented with more to debate by some of referee Al Denham's bizarre decisions.

Just when it looked as though the Hornets might cling on to their narrow lead, the visitors' reward eventually came after 77 minutes when they kicked to touch from a penalty close in.

They drove from the five-metre line-out for flanker Lister Metcalfe to touch down in the corner and level a match that neither side probably deserved to win or lose.

This Saturday's crucial First XV league match away to Tavistock and Second XV Merit Table match at home to Saltash 2nds both kick off at 2.30.

Newquay Hornets: J Mateer, R Macintyre, J Keyter, R Martin, A Mann, S Horton, R Johns, J Bayley, L Bazeley, K Wicketts (A Bazeley), A Burbidge, R Robbins, S Potter (capt) (T Eustice), A Mummery, S Williams. Ryan Johns converted.

Hornets continued to dominate, but they were unable to turn their possession into points. More than 20 minutes had past before Teignmouth put together their first fluent move.

Missed tackles by the Hornets wide out, and determined running gave Chris Tidman the opportunity to touch down for their first points. Dan Force converted to level the scores.

Hornets responded almost immediately with a beautifully worked try. Wing Jon Hyatt scored after the ball had passed through half a dozen pairs of hands. Ryan Johns was on target with the conversion.

Teignmouth looked dangerous with pace wide out, but the quality of play from the Hornets forwards deprived them of ball.

With the half ebbing away, a penalty from Ryan Johns stretched the Hornets lead to 17-7.

In the last minute of the half they were unlucky not to go further ahead when Woodhatch and Potter crossed, only to be denied by minor infringements.

After the break, Hornets continued to dominate set piece and loose play, with the front row of Fouracres, Bazeley and Bayley in charge at the scrum and Eustice and Burbidge tying up the line out.

Aggressive running from No8, Lee Woodhatch set up a ruck from which the ball was passed along the line for wing Rob McIntyre to round the defence to score. Johns converted.

Teignmouth pressed strongly in the last quarter, but the stingy Hornets defence and ability to win possession kept them at bay. The previous season Barum slid out of South West One so promotion this season is only the first step back.

Coach Jeremy Chugg said the players have to take the credit for turning things around and to win all 22 games would be something to cherish.

"For the players who suffered when we were sliding down the leagues, and there are still quite a few of them in the first-team squad, this has been a season to savour," said Chugg.

"When you look at where we were two years ago, relegated for the second successive season and wondering when the slide would stop, they way the club has turned itself around is remarkable. The players have done that by their own hard work and they deserve to enjoy it. To win all 22 games would be the icing on the cake."

At the other end of the table, Crediton's relegation fate will be confirmed if they lose to Tiverton as not even winning a game in hand will save them from finishing in the bottom two.

Injury-hit Kingsbridge have two players returning for tomorrow's South Hams derby with Ivybridge at Cross-in-Hand. Kings have been labouring with a double-figure injury list for weeks, so the reappearances of flanker Neil Darke and Duncan Lilburn couldn't be better timed.

Darke has been out with knee trouble for three weeks while it is more than a month since Lilburn last played.

Ivybridge lock Simon Oliver is missing so Kelvin Trent comes in alongside Tony Wynn in the second row. The selectors will make a late pick between Simon Ebsworth and Richard Young on one of the wings.

Devonport Services have had to shuffle their side around for the trip to Sidmouth.

The Easter college break has robbed them of scrum-half Tom Excell, but brought the return of lock Andy Buscombe to the fold.

Buscombe's return is well timed though as his reappearance frees Martin Brown to go No.8, another position Services are short handed in.

Elsewhere, Truro take on Bude at St Clement's Hill and will hope to offer stiffer opposition than they did in the first leg at Bencoolen Meadow when they went down by a hatful of points.

Club spokesman Nigel Whitford said: "Up there they were very strong and we were short of players, so we hope to do better this time. We are improved and we do hope to win". However, the City side will be without utility back Daniel Dunkin who suffered a badly broken arm at Tiverton.

Dunkin's absence has posed a selection problem because his probable deputy, Jovin Harper, is at Loughborough College and may not get back in time. In that case, Steve Nicholls could come up from the bench.

Whitford added: "We've got two games left - Bude and Barnstaple away - which we know will be very difficult. Tomorrow is our last home game so we want to give a good performance."

Bude vice-chairman Steve Cowling said: "We beat them well up here but it was the week they lost their coach; they were very spirited though and never gave up, right to the end. The visitors replied immediately with another try from Scheres from a fine solo run. Tuhakavaina added the extras.

However, the North Cornwall club surged back with a penalty try awarded when Barum pulled down a maul in front of the posts. Centre Justin Uglow added two more points to keep his side just about in touch.

From the restart Bude stayed with it for the next quarter of an hour, their forwards still a driving force, which allowed Uglow to kick a penalty slap in front of the sticks after Barnstaple had been marched back 30 metres for continuous dissent.

The visitors now looked increasingly indisciplined, but it didn't stop them from dominating the game, and they increased their try-tally to a total of six with some solo virtuosity from Tuhakavaina, who added 14 points, crossing twice, once shooting through from a chip ahead and then from a wide move which finished with him going in under the posts. He converted both scores.

Elsewhere, Hayle, who have a date in the promotion play-off already booked, only had 15 fit players for the trip to Tiverton, where they were beaten 49-0.

"The only comforting thing to came out of the game is that we came away with no further injury problems," said team manager Phil Silvio.

Wing Barney Bell bagged a try hat-trick for Tiverton. With Leon Incledon injured, Chris Pemble comes into the middle of the front row. Other changes will probably see last Saturday's bench trio in the starting line-up.

Squire was more than a little annoyed with Paignton's decision to postpone Wednesday's tie, especially as so much planning had to be done by both players and management ahead of the journey to Queen's Park for the evening kick-off.

Squire said: "We were assured on Tuesday evening that there should be no problem, but we heard at 2.20pm Wednesday afternoon that it had rained enough to prevent the match going ahead. I don't know where we go from here."

Services, who lost the earlier fixture 44-3 at Pottington Road, hope to have hooker Phil Wilson back into an otherwise unchanged squad.

Bude look set for a good run-in to their season as they try to catch Kingsbridge and Hayle, with leaders Barnstaple almost certain to go up. The North Cornwall club have seven matches left and only two of them away - Ivybridge tomorrow and bottom-of-the table Truro.

That said, they currently stand fourth and have 16 points, but so do Sidmouth, Minehead and Tiverton, with Kingsbridge three points in front of them all.

Bude beat Ivybridge well at Bencoolen Meadow in their first game of the season, but their Devon hosts do have a big pack which Bude hope theirs will match. They should be unchanged and at full strength. Club vice-chairman Steve Cowling said: "They've got heavy forwards and that seems to be where their wins are coming from, but our pack should be able to counteract that. We need points to maintain our hopes of promotion."

Ivybridge, meanwhile, have only one player missing from last week. Fly-half Dan Newman broke a finger, so his place will probably go to his younger brother Tom, who moves up from the colts to make his senior debut.

Kingsbridge, in third, walloped Crediton 38-7 last time out. They travel to Withycombe, while fifth-placed Sidmouth are at Tiverton, who beat Ivybridge in their midweek Devon Cup quarter-final clash.

Anchor club Truro will at least travel to Minehead with their heads held high after a rare League win last week against Tiverton. They will be helped by the return of prop Chris Gilbert, back from University in Swansea. He will replace Isaac Scoble in the only change from last week's victorious side.

Truro vice-chairman Nigel Whitford said: "Their backs are very good, but, that said, our players are more confident after last week's good win. We lost to Minehead at home, but it was still reasonably close up to half-time".

Skinners Cornwall Cup Quarter Final.

Underdogs Perranporth were always going to find it difficult to overcome their Higher league City neighbours Truro in this quarter final final of the Skinners Brewery Cup at the Ponsmere. Grant Tuhakariana replied for the visitors with a penalty.

Barum were wind- and slope- assisted in the second half which helped them keep Minehead at arm's length. Full-back Paul Scheres scored one try and set Ian Gear up for the other, which Tuhakariana converted, to seal victory.

"We knew this would be one of the hardest games left this season as Minehead don't give up," said Barnstaple coach Jeremy Chugg. "Their kicker missed three of four shots in the first half which, in such a close game, might well have cost them.

"Minehead didn't have too many chances, but they made us work for ours. Paul Scheres produced a couple of bits of magic in the second half and that opened them up."

Second-placed Hayle had a harder afternoon than anticipated against visiting Truro, who are clearly benefiting from the return of ex-Cornwall coach Phil Angove.

The Lions won 17-12 in front of their own supporters, who were in for a disappointment if they were expecting a repeat of the 36-3 verdict in the first meeting between the clubs.

Midway through the second half it was 17-5 to Hayle with Jimmy Tresize, James Jago and Liam Kearey on the scorelist.

Truro, for whom Ben Chenoweth dotted down in the first half, set up a tense finale when Ross Martin converted a late try by Shaun Roseveor.

Kingsbridge's director of rugby Chris Bowles had no doubts about where his side's strong points were in the 23-6 win over visiting Sidmoth.

"We gave them a good hiding up front - it was great to watch," he said. Simon Mundy kicked a conversion.

Crediton hauled themselves out of the bottom two for the first time in a while thanks to an 18-14 win over Bude which gave them the double over the Cornish side.

Bude were 15-0 down at half-time and always chasing the game after that. "Of all the teams we have played this season they were probably the hardest to break down as they were so good defensively.

"I would put this game up there with Hayle and Bude as among the hardest we have left to play this season."

Barum will be without centre Mark Galliford, who is studying for exams, so Matt Slee comes into the centre with Josh Squire replacing Slee on the bench. Minehead hope to have skipper Jason Hurley back from a calf injury. He faces a late fitness test.

Second-placed Hayle play resurgent Truro knowing that the city side will have gained confidence from their win over Kingsbridge last Saturday - their first in the league this season.

With coach Phil Angove galvanising previously moribund Truro, Hayle are preparing themselves for a close encounter.

Third-placed Bude, six points behind Hayle and a whopping 12 adrift of Barnstaple, go to Crediton looking to avenge their defeat at Bencoolen Meadow before Christmas - one of three in four starts that badly dented the club's promotion chances.

Skipper Brian Crichton is back after a lengthy injury lay-off to lead Devonport Services into their key game away to Withycombe.

Fourth-bottom Withycombe are only a point behind Services so losing to them will drop Services on to the edge of the relegation scrap.
